I’m happy that you’re here to see this new website evolve. I’m leaving everything open and live so you can see day-by-day changes; nothing hidden.

Here is my naked and bare website. You can see that I’m using Wordpress as my Content Management Tool (CMS). For over a year we have been using Wordpress as CMSs for client projects. Wordpress is a great CMS because it lets you easily update content, it separates the design from the content, and is just so powerful.

To put the icing on the cake, I use the Thesis Theme for it’s powerful SEO capabilities, and it’s powerful tools in customizing designs. In today’s website snapshot, you can see a bare-bones Thesis integration. This is what it looks like right out of the box. Pretty cool, right!?

For now, I’m working on content and architecture and as soon as I have all my content up, I’ll be working on a design.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao Tzu

Putting together a website can be a daunting task. I build websites for businesses and individuals every day and know how difficult it can be organizing all your items and getting everything done. Well, even for an experienced web designer like myself, putting together a website for my own business can be even tricker! Sometimes you just need an outside perspective to get things done well.

For this project, so far there is only one perspective…mine. So let’s see what kinds of challenges come up.

But as the wise philosopher Lao Tzu suggests, we just need to start with one step.

Starting Each New Project

The first thing I do when starting any new project is I discuss with my client about the site’s goals and objectives, and the kind of experience they want their user to have. So I did this with myself. Nothing fancy here. Just a few notes going over the Vision, Voice, and Style of the site.

My vision

What kind of emotions does the site need to portray? What does it need to reflect about my business? What are people coming to my site to accomplish?

My voice

What do I need to tell my audience? What kind of tone do I want to set? What do I want my audience to do?

My style

What is it that is going to make this site uniquely “flair?” What kinds of textures do I want to use? What kind of rhythm will the site have? What kind of timber will there be? What will the site feel like?

Ok, we’re going to give this a go! We’re a web design company and we build websites for small businesses. Well, just what happens when a web design company builds their own website!? I’ll be documenting our day-by-day progress as I build the new FLAIR Creative Studio site from the ground up. I’ll be keeping the entire site live as we go.

Hard Hats Required

You are officially in a construction zone. You’ll see how I aim to:

Brainstorm the ambiance and character of the site

Get my content all together

Design the skin

Launch this site in a timely manner

Stay tuned and feel free to share your thoughts. Critiques are always welcomed as long as they come with a suggestion!
